Maksla XO Gallery presents at POSITIONS BERLIN 2024 – an exposition of four contemporary artists from Latvia – Zane Zeivate, Oto Holgers Ozolins, Klavs Loris, Kristaps Zarins.
Oto Holgers Ozolins belongs to the young generation of Latvian sculptors. By using different sculpting techniques and various materials, witty and ironic, the artist is intrigued by how each small action can reflect back on the thinker, like a thread connecting thoughts.  Activities such as fishing, hanging out the laundry, and spoon carving can serve as forms of daily meditation, where the mind becomes effortlessly quiet and peaceful. Delving into his own experiences, he offers a fresh perspective on the world and himself. His sculptural objects reveal a diverse spectrum of movement, showing the artist’s dynamic exploration of form and expression.

Zane Zeivate belongs to the young generation of Latvian female artists. Her art serves as a platform for addressing essential issues related to women’s rights and social equality, women’s emotions, experiences, and aspirations. It is a personal and, at the same time, feminist conversation. Ladders have been central motifs in Zane Zeivate’s artistic vision since her first works. Working with metal, fabric, and embroidered text, she searches for a place in modern urban society.

Klavs Loris’ artistic style is evident in his large-scale works, where he blends classical oil painting with modern mediums. Through experimentation, he developed his own technique, combining photography, digital print, and painting, using dry textile pigments as a key material. His work explores abstraction as a means to encounter, resist, and recreate reality, guided by personal reflections on one's role in society, embodying both self-destruction and growth.

Kristaps Zarins’ painting always addresses the viewer with a form based on reality – a figure, turn of the head, facial expression and body posture, richness of colours and artistic provocation. In his “Greek Series”, the artist refers to Plato’s dialogue “Gorgias” realizing that people’s understanding of justice in public behaviour has remained the same for the last two and a half thousand years. Divine-human beauty still fascinates and stimulates the painter’s imagination. As the seventh part of the body, the head includes consciousness. These heads speak of different states of consciousness.
