The Asphodels is a show made of paintings, video, photos and diary extracts retracing French artist Michel Castaignet’s stay in Sicile in winter 2014–2015.
„I am on the mountain. I’m alone on a rock covered with flowers and the wind blows non-stop.
I have stretched a canvas covering my wall. Every morning I paint a line. I live in a complete asceticism and I wait for my subject to come out.
I have painted many landscapes that I have destroyed. I am looking for something else...
And one morning, the mountain is covered with asphodels.
I pick up some flowers, I cook them and I eat them. In early Greek philosophy, there were two kinds of philosophers, those who need civilisation to feed them and those who could live on Asphodels. I am of the second kind.” Michel Castaignet.
Michel Castaignet’s exhibition “Asphodels” will be accompanied by Agnese Gaile-Irbe’s essay “Mountains and Flowers”.
