IVARS HEINRIHSONS

SIGNS

In Latvian contemporary painting Ivars Heinrihsons occupies his own unique place. Over the years, working with his chosen achromatic palette of colours and holding on to a specific circle of themes (piano, horses and ballerinas), Ivars Heinrihsons has reached a calligraphic virtuosity.

Each gesture of Ivars Heinrihsons’ paintbrush is a result of an intense thinking, which in the latest exhibition has reduced the well-known Heinrihsons’ characters to signs – abstract figures that are formed from diverse patterns of lines and colour fields. All the essence of Ivars Heinrihsons’ painting has been embodied in the sharp and flowing, tangled and calligraphic line.

“A sign – it’s an expression: a concentrate, a demonstration, a position. You have to arrive at it,” Ivars Heinrihsons.

Heinrihsons graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia (1973). Since 1973 he is a Professor of Painting at the Art Academy of Latvia.
His works are in public collections - Latvian National Museum of Art (Riga, Latvia), State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow, Russia), Samlung Friedeman Stockart (Munich, Germany), Zimmerly Art Museum (New Jersey, USA), Grafiken Hus Collection (Mariefred, Sweden).

Ivars Heinrihsons lives and works in Riga, Latvia
