From July 30 to August 25, Paula Zarina’s solo exhibition “Awerenesses” will be held at Maksla XO gallery. (curator Inga Steimane).
Paula Zarina is one of the new generation Latvian painters with already explicit personal style. She is also one of the rare artists in Latvian contemporary art who focuses on landscape. In a realistically poetic manner in which Paula Zarina works in, a painting is not transferred into a copy of nature or a frame of a landscape. It is rather an eye fixed moment seen in nature – “illusions of landscape” – as the paintress herself has named it.
Paula Zarina’s paintings attract with their picturesque qualities – sensitive colour scheme and subtle tonal relations. Also, brushstrokes call for attention – it seems as if the paintress has created her works in one breath – in the moment, when she recorded it in nature. In reality, Paula Zarina’s works are about painting as a medium, although landscape is chosen as the central theme.
Ilze Žeivate, 2015.
“Those are magical moments, when in a split of second I see something that is very clear before my eyes until the moment I wink my eyes , and this apprehension of immeasurability, perfection and even happiness has vanished. It is momentary awareness of fulfilment which vanishes equally momentarily”- Paula Zarina, 2015.
