MAKSLA XO Gallery will present the latest installation SPACE OF THOUGHTS by emerging Latvian sculptor NILS JUMĪTIS
Nils Jumītis’ installation, Space of Thoughts, consists over 100 original books cast in metal – including dictionaries of various world languages, technical manuals, philosophical treatises, sacred texts from different religions, literary classics, and contemporary periodicals. Through the form of the book, the artist reflects on the significance of its content in shaping the human inner self – the “metal space”. He highlights the information of the book that we allow ourselves to let in. The artist invites each individual to quiet self-observation and touch a contemplative state that opens the door to the liminal space – an inner state and sometimes a situation in which people can begin to think and act in a genuinely new way. Nils Jumītis’ sculptural objects are created by melting down various cast iron and aluminium scrap materials, along with discarded metal objects. He uses a unique author’s technique – explosive casting – which is based on controlled explosions and combines randomness with unpredictability. Through this process, the artist creates one-of-a-kind objects.
Nils Jumītis graduated from the Department of Metal Design at the Art Academy of Latvia (2021). Since 2018, he has participated in group exhibitions and international metal design symposiums in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Poland, Slovakia. Most important of the last years: “XXXVIII Congress” (2025–2026, State Antique Collection – Antikensammlung, Munich, Germany), “YES” – Young European Sculpture (2024, the University of Porto, Porto, Portugal), “Outline” (2024, Economic Salon of the National Bank of Poland, Krakow, Poland), “The 41st Japan Art Medal Exhibition” (2023, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan), “Circle of Art” (2023, Albertina Academy of Fine Arts, Turin, Italy), “XXXVII FIDEM Florence 2023” (2023, Grand Hotel Baglioni, Florence, Italy), “Lactaction” (2020, Latvian National Museum of Art, Riga, Latvia), “Future for Nature” (2020, Online exposition, Tsukuba, Japan).
