IEVA ILTNERE

Embroidered Selfie

“A line can be created with pencil, or with paint and brush. You can plow it with tractor or put it together with toy blocks in a meadow. (Ieva Iltnere. Pedvāle, 1996).
In my latest works the line is created with a needle and thread, sometimes just with a needle.
You could say it's needlework.
It all started by accident about five years ago.
The idea was born and began to live in my head, on its own, it was evolving and changing. The process of creating these works was slow, I could not rush anything. It was also difficult to make any changes. This gave me a sense of balance and comfort,” Ieva Iltnere, 2022.

The latest exhibition by Ieva Iltnere „Embroidered Selfie” attests to her ever-changing nature and passion for experimentation. Combining the seemingly incompatible, Ieva Iltnere documents this age with the means of subtle irony, social commentary and paradoxes, simultaneously revealing stories about her own artworks and personality. She asks – why am I here? And her response at the same time is: „I paint, therefore I am”.

Ieva Iltnere (1957) has graduated from Art Academy of Latvia, department of Monumental Painting, workshop of Indulis Zarins (1982). Since 1980, she has organized 24 solo exhibitions and participated in more than 90 important group exhibitions in Latvia and abroad.
