ROMAN KOROVIN

Road Between a Pine Tree and a Bush

"The diptych format... it is the shortest kind of story. here is just... the beginning and the end ) and thrill between these two ))
if I have to describe the content of a work... with words, a narration... that would be rubbish... meaningless... the content is... the contrast and the relations between shapes, color, line, light, brush stroke... the whole formal arsenal of an artist.
the more substantial layers are in the work, the more it will reflect the visible and invisible world around us... but mind is absent here.
large format knocks the viewer off from his feet... like a grenade)) but a small format cunningly pierces through heart... like a needle)) brings tears to eyes.
it’s good if in the diptych between the works... a saturated emptiness appears, it stops the thoughts of a viewer in their tracks and offers a quiet, meditative mood )) even if just for a moment... and the viewer smiles the smile of Mona Lisa" - Roman Korovin.

Artworks by Roman Korovin – photography, drawing, video and installation are characterized by precise observation, visual paradoxes and humor. His paintings, on the other hand, shine quietly with a particular picturesque sensuality, philosophical contemplation, simplicity and truthfulness. “The world around me consists of objects with chiaroscuro and contrasts…” Melting snow, autumn leaves, white flower, duck in flight, wind, glass, soap holder, road between a pine tree and a bush... these are the modest heroes of Roman Korovin’s stories about painting. “Art becomes a miracle, for it is your tool, your practice. Some meditate, others paint. Some sing, yet others pray to God. In fact, when I paint, I feel as if I have come to a confession. When the pastor absolves your sins, it feels as if you have just finished a painting.”

Roman Korovin has graduated from the Department of Graphic Art at the Art Academy of Latvia (1997). He participates in exhibitions since 1991. In collaboration with curators such as Viktor Misiano, Mark Gisborn, Harald Szeemann, Kristin Dittrich, Alise Tifentala, Daiga Rudzate, Iliana Veinberga, Solvita Krese, Ieva Kalnina and others, Roman Korovin’s artworks have been exhibited in many European countries as well as USA.
Roman Korovin has been nominated for the Purvītis Award several times – in 2018, 2009, and 2008. In 2006 and 2007 he received the Latvian Annual Photography Award. His artworks are in the collection of the Latvian National Museum of Art, as well as in private collections in Europe and the USA.
