Vineta Kaulaca “Absorption”

Gallery “Maksla XO” from 04.04. to 01.05.2012

The exhibition “Absorption” is an attempt to touch that, which so closely keeps our eyes focussed on past testimonies and photos. Testimonies to a passage of time which marks the 1970s as childhood territory and its continuation found in today`s space that was once seen with the eyes of a child. To light which is absorbed and still found in   different quality black and white photos, found in almost every family photo album belonging to a certain generation. Fragments of time and experience collect in an unbroken flow, densely covering first impressions. Each moment separates past from present, present from future and only memory can unite the flow and guide it, freeing up a sequential place for an existing moment.

For this series of paintings, selected photos serve as a certain reference point, the motifs of these pictures are at once very private and at the same time witnesses of a belonging to a definite time and space. The less clarity the image provides, the longer our gaze is sustained. Memory closely associates a person`s past, present and future, allowing for the potential to experience sequential time and orientation in space. With the help of memory, the reproduced event has created an entirely new place, a so far non-existent space of consciousness, even though preliminary coordiantes can be found on a map of space and time. The process of painting vests physical tangible substance to light and time by allowing them to be touched.
